Armageddon

Keeva Day 5/31

Armageddon, ‘the last battle between good and evil…’. Not sure if the main battle was getting out of bed on a Sunday morning or last nights burger & chips vs sprints, but I’ll let you know the winner if I’m still in one piece tomorrow! I’m always surprised to see how many people are up & moving early on a weekend, probably because I’ve spent so many of them in bed with a hangover! But as much as I could have stayed in mine this morning, by the end of the class the adrenaline was pumping and I was so glad I went.

I’ve never been to Armgeddon before but it came recommended. I’m not great at going to new things, age hasn’t made much difference to the nerves I get at the idea of a new event or class and had it not been for RedJanuary I can pretty much guarantee I would have bailed on this one. But I turned up, chatted to a couple of other people waiting at the start of the class and found I wasn’t the only new face. Then a friendly face appeared in the crowd as my sister came to keep me company – or maybe test out my stamina… thats the best thing about these classes, you can do them at your own level, and if you need a bit of a push you just need to pick a person to try to keep up with!

Got the heart rate going!

So, for those of you wondering whether to take on the battle, this is the Armageddon overview….
Warm up: ~5min constantly moving in a circle with a mix of running, skipping & jumping followed by some dynamic stretch moves.
Main section: ~30 min split in 3 rounds. Each round has 4 exercises and for each exercise you do 3 * 20 sec moving, 10 sec rest.
1) 3 x sprint
2) 3 x weight / body weight exercise
Round 1 = Pike press
Round 2 = Biceps Curl to Overhead Press
Round 3 = Overhead Press to Tricep extension
3) 3 x sprint
4) 3 x weight / body weight exercise
Round 1 = Weighted ball
Round 2 = Lunge switch
Round 3 = Tuck jumps
Cool down: ~5 min stretching

I normally do three classes a week as part of my routine so since the holidays have disrupted it a bit it was really nice to try this one out today. I regularly go first thing in the morning and love a class specifically because someone else is doing all the thinking for me, I just have to follow along …generally a requirement by the time I get half way through it! And by the end, I’m fully awake, feeling great and a little smug that I’ve finished my exercise for the day 😁

Finally went for a bike ride …

Ruby’s day 5/31

For REDJanuary day five I finally made it out on my bike. My bike is one of my most treasured possessions. I’m so attached to it, it lives in our flat with us instead of the bike shed. This does mean every time I want to use it I have the nightmare task of wedging it into the lift in our building.

The bike belonged to my Nan who passed away when I was 12. Most of my memories of her riding this bike. Whilst I have a sentimental attachment to it, it is possibly the most uncomfortable bike I have ever ridden. It has three gears, (stuck in the third one,) the brakes only sometimes work and it rattles loudly. Not to mention they obviously hadn’t invented gel seats when the bike was made. Nevertheless I can not bring myself to buy another.

Cycling is not something I excel at. There have been a few crashes. So when I announced I was going cycling this morning, my boyfriend was understandably sceptical I would come back in one piece. However, I am pleased to say me and the bike made it round with no major incidents.

Although, at one point being a bit confused about where I was, I decided to follow the road signs. Despite the fact I know the number 11 cycle path goes through my village, I merrily carried on in the opposite direction. Do not follow road signs. Road signs are for cars. Below is a picture of Strava the moment I realised I was heading for a major road.

In the last two years I haven’t cycled further than the pub in the next village. Thanks to REDJanuary and having no sense of direction I managed almost 14miles this morning. I have also eaten 4 slices of toast with chocolate spread. Can’t win them all.

Best bit about where I live always bumping into friendly faces

A big kid at heart

Keeva Day 4/31

Theres nothing I love more than being a big kid & how better to do it than with some little ones! With the intentions of going for a bit of a kick around & a training session on the ‘big boy’ bike, 2 hours later we’d had a ball! We all took on the hill on the ‘big boy’ bike …cycling back up on little pedals with big legs is no small feat!, tumbled round the monkey bars & squeezed down the slide together.

And as if inspired by RedJanuary we came across these adorable carvings in the trees by some inspirational characters! 😉

Let’s Run Girls Sawston

Ruby’s day 4/31

Every Saturday I get up way too early and go running at 7.30am in Sawston with the LRG’s. This morning I could barely move after yesterday’s Jane Fonda workout. Then the clutch in my car stopped working.

Despite this, I soldiered on like the hero I am to get to the first LRG session of the year. I even remembered to wear my beautiful REDJanuary T shirt. However, unfortunately I did not remember to take a photo. So here are some from the summer

The Sawston ladies enthusiasm to run at 7.30am on a Saturday always shocks me. Often I contemplate just staying in bed, but I enjoy running with the LRG’s Sawston group so much I drag myself along each week. Normally unshowered and half asleep.

At LRG’s There is always someone to run with whatever your pace or how far you want to go. Today after 5km with the group, a few of us did a further 5 miles. So calories don’t count for the rest of the day.

I have made some brilliant friends through LRG’s and we are currently planning our second running trip abroad! Wine, running and sunshine are three of my favourite things. Probably in that order.

Let’s Runs Girls is a volunteer lead initiative that encourages people to get running. We have Couch to 5km courses that run January, April and September and we run a steady 5Km all year round. Rain or shine we run every week. Everyone is welcome and one of the best things about our group is we have fun. No one is left behind.

The first ouch!

Keeva Day 3/31

A week or so of holidays and the stupidity of thinking I can just walk out of the gym like my 17 year old nephew = ouch! Ouch when I sit, ouch when I stand, ouch when I walk up the step, ouch going down… think you get the picture! Worst bit is, I know better! I normally take care to stretch out after workouts but I guess my ego took over that one! Well now its in writing I have no excuse next time!

As I was feeling sorry for myself, I decided a less strenuous walk to keep the DOMs at bay would do. I was out & about visiting friends close to Stormont, somewhere I’ve driven past but never stopped to wander round, so took the opportunity. It was a beautiful fresh evening, very picturesque & a great way to clear the head. Plus theres a bit of a hill to raise the heart rate!

And you can always rely on something to make you smile when you’re out for a walk…

Jane Fonda 1982 workout

Ruby’s day 3/31

Today was meant to be bike ride day. However due to writing my assignment (by this I mean enormous amounts of procrastination –  mostly involving Netflix) I ran out of time.

At 5pm, having done zero work and zero exercise I realised I didn’t really want to go outside in the cold and dark. Then inspiration struck … Jane Fonda workout videos are on YouTube!

I’ve binged watched Grace and Frankie and i’m a big Fonda Fan. It felt right to check out some of her earlier work.  I put on my tracksuit and headband and I was ready to go!

The workout itself was a challenge. No wonder the women still looks so good! The video has different sections – floor work, cardio, arm. All sections were tackled with some great enthusiastic noises from Jane and her crew.  During the star jumps in the cardio section, the downstairs neighbours must have wondered what on earth was happening.

Undoubtedly the hardest part was the floor work . I had to recover with chocolate and I may not be able to walk tomorrow.

I had a lot of fun doing day three after a sluggish start. I would recommend a Jane Fonda work out if you fancy a fun challenge with some retro exercise outfits. If I look half as good as she does at 82 I will die happy.

Leg day…

Keeva Day 2/31

Being home for the holidays I’m away from my usual routine so I asked my 17 year old nephew if I could join him at the gym …he gleefully told me he’d saved leg day specially for me! Apparently its really uncool to have your aunt take pics at the gym, so this is the only pic of us both I got. We did a 45 min session which included treadmill sprint warm up, weighted squats, lunges, single leg squats & leg curls. You know its a good work out when you get a little leg wobble along the way & even more so when walking down the stairs later catches you by surprise!

Parkrun

Keeva’s day 1/31…

Day one of REDJanuary kicked off with a Parkrun. I’m home for the holidays so the beautiful Antrim town run it was (pics attached!). The very considerate people organising my local run arranged a slightly later 11am start for new years day, supposedly to allow the enthusiastic touring Parkrun people to do another at 9.30am as well, although I think the great turnout shows the later Antrim run might have facilitated the hangover crew too! After a refreshing 5k run entertained by the gorgeous scenery and other runners, the lovely people of Lough Neagh Rescue provided refreshments …the best end to any run, tea & cake!

Parkruns are great events that happen (normally) on saturday mornings across the UK (& further afield! map) and are accessible to everyone for free. They come in all sorts of flavours, you can walk, run, walk/run(!), push a pram, bring a dog and even bring the kids along to a Junior Parkrun! There are also lots of ‘Couch to 5k’ groups to help those who are more wary of a 5k run build up stamina & fitness, often culminating in a Parkrun finale. Theres lots of options out there, a quick search will reveal everything in your area.

Youtube Yoga

Ruby’s Day 2/31

For day two I did a Youtube Yoga video (Yoga with Adriene). To start with, the four minutes of chat about breathing did not relax me it just made me slightly annoyed. Yoga is not my thing. I want to love it, I just can’t. Maybe I’m doing it wrong?

Two things I noticed whilst doing yoga:

1) My flat is not big enough to do yoga in

2) I need to hoover

One positive thing from this evenings activity is it did highlight I need to stretch more after running.

As I have zero balance and coordination I tend to avoid exercise classes. However I might try a class to see if I can dig deep and find my inner Zen.

Newquay Harbour Dip

Ruby’s day 1/31…

Day one of REDJanuary kicked off for me with a Harbour Dip in Newquay. Every year the town take a dip in the Harbour on New Year’s Day. The five pounds it costs to join in is donated to Clic Sargent, a cancer charity that focuses on young people with cancer.  For more information on the work they do this is their website: https://www.clicsargent.org.uk/

As predicted, I was hungover. Thankfully the “dip” doesn’t take place until mid day.

The pictures sum up how I was feeling before and after.  Getting in the water was freezing but once in the water, it wasn’t as bad as expected. There was a fantastic range of ages that took part and someone’s Labrador also joined in. It definitely started REDJan with a splash (bad joke alert).  After I swam the (short) distance around the harbour wall I felt a strange mixture of hangover and elation. I felt like a champion for ten minutes. Then my feet went numb.

It would have been great to post a video but unfortunately I was swearing far too much to film.

I need to say a big thank you to the rest of the family who joined me and my Mum who was on hand with, enthusiasm,  towels and hot squash. I think day two will be inside and dry!
